What's New with Crew?

It's time for another successful season of rowing at Scotia-Glenville!

SGRA is rowing two boats - one four girls and one four boys - in the Eastern New York State Public High School Rowing Invitational Regatta on Sunday, May 18, in Newburgh, about one and a half hours south of Scotia. Races begin at 9 a.m. and all races are finals, there are no heats or semi-final races. There are 113 boats registered in the race, according to the site. There is not much more info about the schedule. That will be forthcoming.

Here is the link to the race info that we have: http://www.roninracing.com/info.asp?p=default&pt=rowing&GroupID=3803&InfoType=Competitors

Here are the directions on the web site

Take the Route 9w south exit off of Interstate 84 in Newburgh NY, turn

left on to marine drive towards waterfront after the Sunoco Station.

When you reach the waterfront, spectators should stop and park at the finish line at the Newburgh Landing.

Team Trailers and Buses should continue on to the second stop sign which is Renwick Street where they

should turn left to the river then a quick right to the boat house parking lot after crossing RR tracks.

Congratulations to all SGRA rowers during the THE NEW YORK STATE SCHOLASTIC ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA this weekend, May 10 and 11, on Saratoga Lake in Saratoga Springs. The boys and girls did an excellent job; the girls raced in the finals on Sunday. The results are at http://www.racetrak.com/regatta.asp?CurrRegattaID=210

Check out pictures on the photos page to the left.

FLOWERS ARE IN: Check with Bev Bulson to pick up your order sheet before going over to Lansing Farm this Thursday-Saturday, May 15-17, to pick them up. The farm's directions are here: Lisha Kill Road in Niskayuna.  If you go out Rt 7 and take a right on to Lisha Kill, Lansing Farms if about 1 1/2 miles down on the right.

SGRA to march in SCOTIA MEMORIAL DAY PARADE ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, AT 6 P.M. - More information will follow.

PRACTICES ARE NOW AT 4:15 P.M. EACH DAY AT THE UNION COLLEGE BOATHOUSE. They will be held each day of the vacation week, from 4:15-6 p.m. PLEASE BE PROMPT.

FUTURE EVENTS: At the parent meeting, a list of future events was handed out. It showed that SG rowers will compete in the sectional competition in Niskayuna on May 3 and in the state's competition on May 10 and 11 in Saratoga. Coach Michael is looking into field a team to attend the Newburgh competition the weekend of May 17. The team may also row at Pittsford on May 31-June 1. As well, rowers will march in the Scotia Memorial Day parade on Wednesday, May 21

SINCE WE ARE COMMITTED TO ROWING OUT OF UNION COLLEGE: At this time we are now at 5 days a week for practice. Mon - Fri. 4:30pm-6pm at Union. Time frames are going to be very tight among the different teams rowing so prompt attendance to practice and prompt pick up of rowers is a neccessity for this relationship to work at Union. Guilderland Rowing starts at 3:30pm, SGRA starts at 4:30pm and Union starts at 5pm.  We are ready to put our boats in the water at 4:30 so that we are out of the way for Union.  Parking should start to done back in front of the pool area because all boat will be moved in and out of the boathouse. That parking area should be left clear for boats.

The best way to contact Coach Michael is by telephone: 845-926-6213 or TEXT MESSAGES. His email is ma999791@albany.edu, but he often doesn't check it during the day. If a rower will miss a practice, telephone or text is the best way to send the message.

ATTENDANCE SHEETS: Varsity rowers need to remember to hand in your attendance sheets to coach each week. Both the middle and high school offices are aware that Coach Michael is asking for weekly attendance sheets from our rowers. MS students should see Mrs. Riggi in the office; HS rowers should see Mrs. Moehle. In both cases, rowers should stop in early in the day to ask for them because they may have to return later to pick them up. Once we have a list of who our rowers will be for this season, we will send a list to each office to make it easier to get the sheets each week.

ALL ROWERS should come to practice each week with clothing for both INDOORS AND OUTDOORS. Be prepared to erg and run.

ALL ROWERS AND THEIR PARENTS are being asked to sign contract from Coach Michael for the spring season. It outlines his expectations of each rower and each rower's responsiblity toward him and the team. Find it as a PDF above.

COACH MICHAEL AIKEN met with many rowers after school on Friday, Jan. 18 at the high school. He was very upbeat about the new season, saying that he will work everybody hard but you'll be glad in the end as we start to win meets. He outlined several of his expectations, which will be written into a contract between him and each rower. He encouraged a few things, like eliminating junk food, fast food and soda from rowers' diets. He also stressed that each rower is a scholar-athlete and that studies come first in all cases. He also said he expects that grades and attendance will be kept respectable during the season.

Coach Michael also asked each rower to email him their PERSONAL goals for the coming season. He email address is ma999791@albany.edu and his telephone number is 845-926-6213.
